Members,

The Tampa Bay Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is seeking a volunteer for a pro bono opportunity related to a matter pending in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Thank you to Dan Dietrich of Burr Forman and to Enrique Escarraz for volunteering for the last several pro bono opportunities!

U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Jenkins has requested a volunteer to represent a pro se litigant, Georgia Shaffer, solely in connection with a mediation at 1:00 p.m. on October 15, 2014. Schaffer filed a Federal Tort Claims Act complaint against the United States, claiming negligence in connection with a hip replacement procedure performed at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bay Pines and other medical treatment thereafter. Further details are available in the court file, Shaffer v. United States, Case No. 8:12-cv-0559-MSS-TBM.

Please contact the chair of the FBA Tampa Bay Chapter’s Pro Bono Committee, Mike Matthews of Foley & Lardner LLP, at 813-225-4131 or mmatthews@foley.com as soon as possible if you are interested in providing assistance on a pro bono basis. To the extent costs are incurred, reimbursement from the Bench Bar Fund may be requested (in advance of incurring the costs).
